China’s population growth rate has reached its lowest level in decades. This was stated in the latest census data released on Tuesday.
According to the BBC, the average annual population growth rate in the last 10 years was 0.53 percent. But in the previous decade (2000–2010) the rate was zero point 56 percent. Now the total population of the country is 141 crores.
The report of the decade-long census was supposed to be released last April. This census was conducted last year. About 6 million workers went door to door to collect information.
China’s decade-long controversial “one child” policy changed in 2016. Fearing that the country’s working population would dwindle in the future, she was allowed to have two children. But even then the population did not grow at the expected rate.
Ning Zhize, head of the National Bureau of Statistics, told reporters that the adjustment to China’s reproductive policy had yielded positive results. However, he also said that the growing number of elderly people is putting long-term pressure on population development.
According to the census, the number of people aged 15 to 59 has dropped by seven per cent, according to AFP. On the other hand, the number of people in their sixties has increased by 5 percent. The country’s marriage rate has fallen sharply in recent years, which has had an impact on birth rates. At the same time, rising prices, women’s reluctance to have children late or having children are being cited as the reasons behind the declining birth rate.
Ning Jije added that the Corona epidemic could also be a cause. He said Corona has made every day of life uncertain. In this situation, panic has been created about giving birth in the hospital. As a result, couples are less likely to have children.
1 crore 20 lakh children were born in 2020. In the previous year, the number was 1 crore 46 lakh. It was said then that this was the lowest rate since 1949. Now the average population of each family in the country is 2.62. 10 years ago this number was 3.10 people.
