Displaced Rohingyas from Myanmar have left for Bhasanchar from Ukhia Kutupalong camp of Cox’s Bazar.
A group of Rohingyas left Ukhia College ground from Cox’s Bazar for Bhasanchar in Noakhali around 11am on Thursday in eleven buses. It has been 39 months since about seven and a half lakh Rohingyas came to Bangladesh to escape the atrocities of Myanmar army.
Attempts to send Rohingyas to Rakhine have failed for two times. In such a situation, the first group of Rohingyas was sent to Bhasanchar as part of easing the pressure on the Cox’s Bazar camp.
Meanwhile, two international human rights organizations have called on the Bangladesh government to immediately stop the transfer of Rohingya refugees from the Cox’s Bazar camp to Bhasanchar. The New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the London-based Amnesty International made the call to the Bangladesh government on Thursday. Both organizations have published statements on their websites.
Despite different opinion from the international community, including the United Nations, the government has implemented a shelter project at a cost of Tk 2,312 crore to relocate the Rohingya to Bhasanchar. 13 km of dams have been constructed to protect 40 sq km area from tides and tidal surges. Infrastructure has been built in 120 cluster villages suitable for one lakh Rohingyas.
