Challenges faced by Bangladeshi migrant workers and Solutions

Do you have experience in working with Bangladeshi migrant workers who are either planning to migrate to a different country or who have returned from working in a different country? In particular, the challenges that migrant workers face, providing support services to migrants and developing solutions to address migrant worker issues has been discussed.

To reach migrant workers aspirations, migrant workers put a lot at stake.

Challenges faced by the migrant workers are-

High fees for migration charged by recruitment agencies, especially for low skilled jobs; low wages, lack of information on migration opportunities and risks; discrimination, exploitation and abuse while overseas; and insufficient services to protect the rights of workers.

With little education and poor access to information, the desperation to rise out of poverty can cloud basic awareness and judgment of utilizing reliable services and safe channels of migration.

Support services-

  • Awareness activities, capacity building through skills development and prevention of trafficking
  • Provide support to migrants through embassies, in the country of destination and their families in proper utilisation of remittance
  • Provide on arrival support to vulnerable men and women migrants

Solutions-

  • Reintegration upon return, Psycho-Counseling, training and financial support to facilitate socio economic reintegration of returnee migrants
  • Engaged trained volunteers at the grassroots level to provide essential information on safe migration
  • Creating partnerships that facilitate improved access and reliable information at the community level
  • Forums within communities that discuss and share up-to-date migration matters and solutions
  • Implementation of laws and regulations through advocacy, training of journalists and media mobilisation
  • Arrival assistance
