The incidence of breast cancer is on the rise. Its treatment is still expensive and risky. Research is ongoing to cure this cancer. New good news is also coming. But the researchers also heard a ‘bad’ news. They say that even after treatment, breast cancer can return within 15 years. However, this risk is not the same for everyone.
A team of researchers from various universities, laboratories and medical centers in the United Kingdom has conducted research on 63,000 women who have been treated for breast cancer. They kept these women under observation for 20 years. The results of the observation were recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Scientists say those with large tumors and cancer cells that have spread to the lymph nodes in the lower extremities have a 40 percent risk of recurrence. And this return usually happens within 15 years. However, in one or two cases, a 20-year example has also been found.
Researchers say that it is possible to reduce this risk by taking hormone therapy. They also say that those who are relatively small in size are less likely to have this risk.
