A few things stand out. The gap between first and second is about eight points, which is larger than the gap between second and tenth combined. Seventeen of the top 50 entries are American universities, and five are Chinese. Europe is strong in the top 20, with the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, Germany, France and the UK all represented.
The Top Universities, One by One
Wageningen University and Research (Netherlands). It scores 100 out of 100 on academic reputation, employer reputation and H-index citations. Its weakest indicator is international research network, at 87.6, and even that is high. A QS-affiliated report says Wageningen has held first place for ten years running. Best for: students who want a research-heavy, internationally focused program in food, plant and environmental science.
University of California, Davis (United States). A widely used comparison point in this field; a trade-magazine summary of QS’s list says UC Davis has finished first or second every year since QS launched the subject ranking more than a decade ago. It scores 92.1 for academic reputation. Best for: students who want a large research university with strong industry ties in California’s agricultural economy.
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (Sweden). A specialist institution rather than a general university. It is also eighth in ShanghaiRanking’s 2025 agricultural sciences list. Best for: students interested in forestry, animal science, rural development and environmental topics.
Cornell University (United States). Its citations per paper score is 94.3, one of the highest among the top five. Best for: students who want agriculture inside an Ivy League research environment.
China Agricultural University (China). Fifth at QS and first at both US News and ShanghaiRanking’s 2025 list. Its H-index score of 96.5 is one of the strongest in the top ten, while its employer reputation score (67.8) is lower than most of its neighbors. Best for: researchers and graduate students who want a large output of agricultural science.
Purdue and Iowa State (United States). Both land in the top ten on the strength of employer reputation (87.5 and 86.6). Best for: students who care about graduate employment in the American agricultural and food industry.
ETH Zurich (Switzerland). It has the highest citations per paper score in this group (94.8) but the lowest academic reputation among the top ten (75.8). Best for: students who want a science and engineering approach to agriculture and environment.
Ghent University and NMBU (Belgium, Norway). Ghent has the highest international research network score in the top ten (82.4). NMBU is a life sciences specialist, like SLU. Best for: students who want European programs outside the Netherlands.
Why Rankings Disagree
Three big rankings give three different top tens, and none is wrong.
QS mixes reputation surveys (academics and employers) with research measures. That helps well-known universities and those with strong employer links.
US News lists these as its top ten for agricultural sciences: China Agricultural University, Jiangsu University, Jiangnan University, Wageningen, Northwest A&F University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing Agricultural University, UMass Amherst, South China University of Technology and Nanchang University. The page I read did not show the edition year, so check the current version. US News leans heavily on research output, which is why several large Chinese universities rank high while Cornell and UC Davis do not appear in its top ten.
ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025 scores five areas: faculty, output, research quality, impact and international collaboration. Its agricultural sciences list has China Agricultural University first, Northwest A&F University second, Nanjing Agricultural University fourth, SLU eighth and Huazhong Agricultural University tenth. It was published in late 2025, and I did not find a 2026 edition yet.
The practical point: a university that ranks well everywhere, such as Wageningen, China Agricultural University or SLU, is a safer sign of quality than one that ranks well in only one list.
What the Scores Show
The indicator breakdown tells you more than the overall rank.
- Reputation versus research. Zhejiang University scores 55.5 for academic reputation but 98.4 for H-index citations. The reverse pattern is common at smaller universities with strong regional standing.
- Employer visibility. Indonesia’s IPB University scores 90.4 for employer reputation, higher than most of the top 20, though its citations score is 68.9.
- Where a school looks strong on paper but not for you. The University of Florida scores 94.7 on H-index citations and 84.7 on international research network but only 44.3 on employer reputation. A student focused on jobs may weigh that differently from a student focused on research.

Bangladesh Agricultural University has sat in the 251 to 300 band in 2024, 2025 and 2026, after 301 to 350 in 2022 and 2023, according to QS’s university profile. Gazipur Agricultural University’s Vice-Chancellor described its first inclusion as a step toward its goal of joining the world’s top 100. I did not find Indian agricultural universities in the top 50 of the QS list, so I have not listed any.
The University of Agriculture Faisalabad at 33 shows that a strong reputation and employer score can lift a university above larger names. It scores 84.0 on employer reputation but 59.8 on academic reputation.
How to Choose a University
A ranking is a starting point. Use these questions to narrow the list.
What do you want to study? Agriculture covers agronomy, animal science, soil science, food systems, forestry and agricultural economics. A specialist like SLU or NMBU may beat a general university that ranks higher overall.
Undergraduate or graduate? The subject ranking is driven by research, so it tells you more about master’s and PhD programs than about undergraduate teaching.
Where do you want to work? US universities such as Purdue, Iowa State and Texas A&M score well with employers. Wageningen and other European schools are strong for research careers in Europe.
What can you afford? I did not verify tuition, so check each university’s fee page and scholarship options. Public universities in Europe and China often charge international students less than private US universities, but fees vary by country and program.
What language is the program in? Confirm on the program page. Many top programs in the Netherlands and Scandinavia offer English-taught master’s degrees, but availability differs by course.
