What you should eat in Ramadan to stay healthy

The holy month of Ramadan has arrived. In this long summer days, it is necessary to stay healthy. After long fasting days eating too much can increase the body weight. To avoid sickness and stay healthy throughout the Ramadan you should follow a balanced diet.

Eating more fried and fatty oily foods can increase blood cholesterol levels. Avoid lot of salty food, deep fried and sweet food. Try to eat high fiber foods after fasting to ease constipation.

What to eat in Sehri

To keep you well hydrate drink plenty of fluids and choose fluid-rich foods. Eat starchy foods for energy, choose high fibre or wholegrain varieties to keep you feeling fuller and help to prevent constipation.

The example foods you can eat during Sehri are rice, mixed vegetables, fish or chicken, pulses, yogurt or low fat milk. At this time, if you eat dates, you will feel less thirsty all day long.

If you don’t want to eat rice, you can try oats, bread, chira-yogurt, corn flakes-milk and high fibre breakfast cereals. You could trybread with nut butters (without added salt), soft cheese, or banana. Many people drink more water together during sehri which should be avoided. From Iftar to till Sehri, the body should be kept moist by drinking frequent small amounts of water or other liquids.

What to eat in Iftar

After long day fasting the body can rehydrate and gain energy from the foods and drinks in iftari. You should start to eat slowly in iftar and drink plenty of fluids and eat low-fat and fluid-rich foods. Eat small amount of fatty food, sugary foods and sugary drinks. You only have short time in Ramadan days to eat and drink to provide your body essential nutrients and fluids, so the quality of your diet is important during this time.

The items you can choose during iftar are dates, boiled gram, any fruit juice, fruits salad, vegetables, chicken or oats soup, boiled egg, young coconut water and yogurt lachhi. You can also like to keep pudding, chira-yogurt, pancakes, fruit custards, homemade chicken halim, milk etc.
