Robert Lewandowski has been named FIFA Footballer of the Year. The winners were announced at the FIFA World Cup in Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday at the Virtual The Best FIFA Football Awards. This information has been revealed in the live report of BBC. The Bayern Munich forward has been named “The Best FIFA Men’s Player” for the first time in his career in recognition of his outstanding performances in the 2019-20 season.
On November 25 last year, FIFA released a list of 11 people selected by an expert panel to consider their performance from July 20 to October 6. Then last Friday the shortlist was brought down to three. Lewandowski was among the three. He also had the names of Messi and Ronaldo.
Lewandowski played a leading role in Bayern’s sixth Champions League win. The Polish forward scored a maximum of 15 goals in the tournament. He was also instrumental in the team winning the Bundesliga and the German Cup. The 32-year-old striker scored 55 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions last season. Lewandowski scored 16 more goals last season than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues in all competitions.
“I am very proud and delighted to receive this award,” Lewandowski said. A great day for me, my club and colleagues.
