Myanmar’s Rohingya excluded from General elections

Voting continues today in Myanmar’s general election. This is the second general election in the country after decades of military rule. But the Rakhine state, which is dominated by ethnic minorities and religious figures, is out of the electoral process.

Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) came to power in the country’s first general election since the end of military rule. During the rule of Aung San Suu Kyi’s NLD government, the Muslim Rohingya people of Rakhine State were persecuted. At present 7 lakh Rohingyas are living as refugees in Bangladesh. Political analysts say Aung San Suu Kyi’s government has not taken a decision that angers the military and the military-controlled Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), despite the end of a long period of military rule in the country. However, the USDPE is the current opposition party with whom it is difficult to determine the policy differences between the two. According to the country’s constitution, 25 percent of seats are reserved for army members. Suu Kyi’s government has not adopted any plans to change the constitution, which was drafted by the country’s military. According to international media sources, analysts have called this year’s election in Myanmar a farce.

In the meantime, students protesting against the boycott of the country’s elections have been beaten and jailed. Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections. But the NLD government ignored that demand and went on the path of holding elections.
