After a long wait, Argentina finally won the Qatar Football World Cup. Lionel Messi won the coveted title. In this World Cup, 32 teams played 64 matches in 29 days. How much Qatar earn from the best ever World Cup?
Qatar World Cup 2022 CEO Nasser Al Khater expressed hope that Qatar’s income from this World Cup will be 17 billion dollars.
However, Qatar’s tourism, hospitality, retail, transportation and many other sectors have benefited from this World Cup. Especially the country will benefit greatly from the huge influx of tourists.
According to the research firm Knight Frank, 1.5 million visitors gather in Qatar on the occasion of the Football World Cup 2022. Next year, the country will host the ‘Asian Cup-2023’. As a result, tourists will continue to increase. Even till the year 2030, the growth in the country’s hotel and hospitality sector will be 12 percent. The value of this sector will be 55 billion dollars. Which will contribute 12 percent to Qatar’s GDP.
According to the organization, the number of tourists in Qatar will increase to 5.4 million in 2023 and 7 million by 2030. However, Qatar has spent 229 billion dollars on infrastructure development in 11 years to host this huge event.
On the other hand, FIFA has greatly benefited from this arrangement. FIFA earned $7.5 billion from commercial deals around the World Cup in Qatar alone. This is at least $1 billion more than the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
FIFA’s income comes mainly from five categories—TV broadcasting rights, marketing rights, service rights and ticket sales, registration rights and other profits. The largest portion of revenue comes from broadcast rights. Its contribution to FIFA’s total revenue is about 56 percent. Marketing sector gives second highest 29 percent. And the remaining 15 percent comes from other sectors.
According to FIFA’s website, their target revenue from television broadcasting rights during the 2022 FIFA World Cup was $2.64 billion. Revenue from the sale of marketing rights was estimated at $1.35 billion. 50 crore from sale of services and tickets and potential revenue from sale of registration rights was estimated at 140 crore.
Ticket prices for World Cup matches this year were also at an all-time high, according to a study by Keller Sports. In other words, football fans have never had to pay such expensive tickets to watch a World Cup game before.
According to the German organization, ticket prices for the 2022 World Cup are about 40 percent higher than for the 2018 World Cup. The average price of each ticket for the final match in Qatar World Cup was 684 pounds, which is more than 87 thousand rupees in Bangladeshi currency. As a result, more than 300,000 tickets were sold at an average price of 286 pounds for each seat in the entire tournament. FIFA’s income from this sector is about 1 billion dollars. In other words, the company’s income in this sector is almost twice as much as expected.
