How deadly the coronavirus is?

The name Coronavirus comes from the Latin word corona, meaning crown or hola. Coronavirus is actually transmitted from animals to humans. For example, SARS was transmitted from civet cat in human, while MERS came from a camel. There are several known Coronavirus in animals that have not yet been infected in humans.

The death toll from the new coronavirus has crossed drastically from the SARS outbreak of 2002-2003, which also originated in China.

The death toll for SARS (SARS) infections was around 9 percent – around 800 worldwide and about 300 in China alone. The MERS, which did not spread widely, was even more severe, with one third of the infected died. The new coronavirus with a much wider spread rate compare of SARS in terms of case number, the death rate remains much lower around 3.4%, according to WHO.

 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), older people are at higher risk of serious illness from Covid-19, which can increase stress during a crisis. People with serious problems such as heart or lung disease or diabetes are at risk of developing more serious complications from Covid-19 illness.
