The Institute of Geography and Sustainability (IGD) seeks to fill the position of Graduate Assistant in Geography of Mobilities. The position is part of the research team in geography of mobilities led by Professor Patrick Rérat.

The Institute of Geography and Sustainability (IGD) is an interdisciplinary community of about 100 academics that work on space, place and the environment. With 15 professors and close to 40 PhD students, the department offers a vibrant, stimulating environment for cutting-edge research. It hosts regular lecture series and distinguished guest researchers from around the world. The post is located in the research group Urban Studies which is one the institute’s six groups.

Contract length: 1 year, renewable 2 x 2 years, maximum 5 years

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will develop independent research leading to a PhD in the broad field of geography of mobilities. She or he will enjoy considerable freedom in defining the topic of the thesis. It should, however, relate to one or more of the following themes:

Mobilities and sustainability (transition to a low carbon mobility, practices of utility cycling, shared mobilities, micro-mobilities, etc.)

Mobilities and space (importance of mobilities in spatial organization, urban form and sustainable urban planning, etc.)

Mobilities and society (role of the various forms of mobility in lifestyles and leisure, in the organization of society, etc.)

The candidate will devote at least half of working time to her/his PhD research, with the remaining time reserved for supporting teaching and research of the team in geography of mobilities.

Eligibility:

Master’s degree in human geography (or in another social science).

Interest for the various forms of mobility (residential choice, internal migration, everyday mobility, etc.) and their links with spatial dynamics and planning issues.

The applicants should have the goal of completing a Ph.D. thesis in one of the fields of the geography of mobilities.

Experience in mixed methods (articulation of quantitative and qualitative methods)

French language proficiency is expected (French is the working language as well as the teaching language). Good command of English and German would be an asset.
