Ph.D. Assistantship available in Wheat Breeding and Genetics

The Wheat Breeding and Genetics programs at Washington State University are recruiting a motivated graduate student to help design, complete, and communicate original research on genetics of yield potential in wheat as part of a NIFA-funded Wheat Coordinated Agricultural Project. The research assistant will conduct experiments to identify and genetically characterize a locus that strongly influences yield component traits in spring wheat; a combination of advanced molecular biology/genetics laboratory techniques, field-based evaluations, and high throughput phenotyping techniques will be employed to meet research goals.

Assistantship Details:

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, Washington State University, offers graduate research assistantships from recognized colleges and universities. Research assistants conduct experiments under the direction of their advisor. Graduate student appointments are half-time and students on formal appointment receive stipends on an annual basis. Students expecting to work part-time on research during the academic year and full-time during the summer. Appointments will continue for a minimum of two years for M.S. students and three years for Ph.D. students. 

Salary Range:

Base salary is $18,204.00 for Ph.D students ($1517/mo), which may be higher for outstanding applicants. The assistantship appointment also includes tuition waivers per our policy outlined at http://gradsch.wsu.edu . Resident tuition waivers have an estimated value of $3,731 per semester; non-resident waivers have an estimated value of $6,094 per semester. All students on an assistantship require to pay a residual fee each semester of approximately $1,000.00, which may cover for outstanding applicants. The residual fee pays for Health and Wellness Services, Pullman Transit, the Student Recreation Center, and a small portion of tuition not covered by the assistantship. Also included is a comprehensive health (medical/dental) insurance program with the annual premium paid by the department estimated at $1,500. Scholarship opportunities are also available.
